Surface coating technician (m/w/d)

Before use, connector parts that consist of a metal (e.g., brass) must be coated with a thin layer of precious metal. Typically, this is done to achieve higher technical values, a greater aesthetic appeal, better current transmission, increased corrosion protection, or simply in accordance with a customer requirement. Surface coating technicians, also known as electroplaters, work with a variety of chemical baths. Their training includes chemical wastewater treatment in addition to various processes relating to coating technology and laboratory/environmental technology. After completing their highly specialized training in the field of industrial chemicals, surface coating technicians can choose from a diverse range of jobs.

Training period: 3 years

School-leaving qualification: high school diploma (equivalent to “Quali” or “Mittlere Reife”) or higher

You will need: a precise, methodical approach to your work, an interest in chemistry, mathematics, and physics, as well as technical aptitude

Your training

An apprenticeship as a surface coating technician lasts for three years. During your training you will learn about the different types of coatings, including chemical and electrolytic coating processes. You will also monitor the technical equipment used in our live operations.

At ODU, you will primarily work with metallic materials, which are used in the vast majority of our products. You will also check the coating thickness and independently analyze the results in our lab.

Another aspect of this apprenticeship deals with wastewater treatment and includes a basic course in mechanical processing. You will also spend time in all manufacturing departments to get to know and understand the respective products and processes.

In-house electroplating shop:

On your journey to becoming a surface coating technician at ODU, you will work in all areas of our in-house electroplating shop. You will work on six different pieces of equipment and be shown how to set them up properly. We will also teach you how to ensure high-quality parts via proper finishing techniques.

Wastewater treatment plant:

Another key area is the wastewater treatment plant. This is used to treat the wastewater from the various plants, e.g., rinse water, so that it can be discharged back into the sewer system. You will learn how the different types of wastewater should be treated. We will then show you how to test the treated wastewater for any remaining contaminants using rapid tests and measurement instruments. If your readings indicate that the water is environmentally safe, it can then be discharged into the sewer system.

Chemical lab:

The third key area is the chemical lab. This is where the chemical baths are monitored. You will play an active role here as you learn how to work cleanly and precisely. You will perform analyses, test parts for solderability, and support the team by accurately documenting your results.

What will you learn at the vocational school?

You will learn the theory behind effective finishing as well as all key processes related to electroplating. You will also attend practical classes in which you will learn how parts are mechanically pretreated (e.g., by sanding, brushing, or polishing) and then finished via manual electroplating. Our apprentices also work in the lab, where they learn how to perform analyses and Hull cell tests.

Final examinations

After your three years of training, you will sit a written exam, which is divided into three areas. This is followed by the practical exam, which lasts for one and a half days.

Once you have secured a permanent job with us, you will be able to continue your professional development as a specialist. As a surface coating technician, we assume that you will be willing to perform shift-based work (after your training).

As a surface coating technician, you will also have the opportunity to qualify as a master craftsman or technician through further training at the technical college in Nuremberg. It is also possible to study surface technology at the university in Aalen (Baden-Württemberg).

  • As a rule, we hire two apprentice surface coating technicians every year
  • You do not necessarily need to have focused on technical subjects at high school to learn this profession
  • With a good school-leaving qualification, you can learn this very interesting profession as long as you are committed and have a knack for handicrafts
